New vs old: what will change in how we execute payments, settle trades and custody assets

Location:Room C4, Level 2

  • Collateral and liquidity
  • Digital/digitalised assets
  • Regulation

Want background before you meet up? Check out these teaser interviews with, respectively, Philipp Dettwiler here and Nick Philpott here – as well as this recent column article by Olaf: “The challenges of today: resilience and making all the new things fit in with the old”

Philipp Dettwiler expects the discussion to unpack why the long-standing vision of digital assets is now shifting into practical coexistence, driven by increasing institutional demand, maturing technology, and the changing regulatory environment: “Up to 2019, the bottleneck was institutional-grade tech,” he says. “From 2019 to 2024, it was regulation. Now, it’s all about speed of adoption. Everyone asks, ‘when is the moment?’ The better question is, ‘will you be ready when it hits?’”

Nick Philpott uses the example of an oil company with a tanker full of crude that needs $120 million paying to underline the limitations of faster payment systems. “I want the audience to go away with an appreciation that there now is an alternative for the 20% of payments that cause 80% of their problems,” he adds. “Assuming most of your flows are US, EU, and UK, these payments will carry on being fine. But then every now and again you will need to move money from a country where repatriating fiat currency costs a fortune.”
