New vs old: the promise of new payments infrastructure in optimising liquidity

Location:Room C2, Level 2

  • Digital/digitalised assets

Every day, trades are settled and payments made, the success of which depends on stable financial market infrastructures (FMIs), good liquidity, and strong processes. Session moderator Olaf Ransome says of the status quo: "We are effective; i.e. we get things done, but we are far from efficient. Intraday liquidity is an expensive thing that is poorly understood."

He believes that all things settlement are becoming more complex, with pressures coming from faster settlement, new digital assets, and more instant payment. "The daily work of operations gets harder and less resilient every year."

But innovation brings hope. "As we develop new FMIs around tokenisation, we have an opportunity to design in a way that delivers on both effectiveness and efficiency. For me, the means of payment is the key enabler for tomorrow’s world."

Where are we going in terms of our potential new infrastructure? Are stablecoins the global panacea? On stage, a team of payment professionals will set the scene and shed some welcomed light on the next wave of payment innovation.

Adding a session to your personal schedule does not commit you to attend (except for the dinner or exclusive sessions where very clearly communicated). Conversely, it does not guarantee your seat, so come in good time where you suspect a full room.
